CHECKING OUT: Deluxe Check Printers, a Minnesota-based company that prints most of the nation’s bank checks, is closing two plants in Chatsworth (D1). About 340 people will be laid off. . . . Some seemed resigned to the change: “It’s the information age and all,” said MaryLou Cervenka, 41. “Sometimes I think I’m just living in the wrong era.”

FINAL THREE: Cal State Northridge has announced interviews for three finalists for the post of athletic director. Bobby Thompson, of the University of Texas at San Antonio, will visit Thursday. Paul Bubb, CSUN’s interim athletic director, will be interviewed March 26. Joseph O’Donnell, formerly of American University, will come March 27.

WATER WORLD: The gorgeous blue universe under the sea was a million miles from Mario Lozano’s world--until the Youth Quest scuba program came along. Lozano, above, of North Hollywood, hopes to become an assistant diving instructor thanks to the program, which targets youths who cannot afford such an expensive hobby (B1). . . . The program is credited with helping some teens improve their grades and loosen gang ties.

BIG WEEKEND: Like a blockbuster film on its opening days, the new Mid-Valley Regional Library in North Hills racked up big numbers over the weekend, said librarian Daniel Dupill. About 3,400 books were checked out Friday, the branch’s first day open, and Dupill estimates that even more were borrowed Saturday. . . . “A lot of our shelves are empty now,” Dupill said. “We’ve had long lines for most of the three days.”

DISNEY LEASE: Glendale has snagged a significant chunk of the Burbank-based Walt Disney Co.’s business, with an agreement to house 153,000 square feet of office space at the Ventura Freeway and Brand Boulevard. . . . Disney will share space with Ted Turner’s animation company.
