Supervisor Sponsors Measure X Forum

Measure X, the referendum over a new wing at Ventura County Medical Center, will be discussed today at a Thousand Oaks meeting sponsored by county Supervisor Frank Schillo.

Dr. Sam Edwards, the medical center’s administrator, will speak about the measure. Schillo will explain why the board supports the $56-million outpatient clinic, approved by the supervisors in 1994 but challenged by a rival Ventura hospital.

Community Memorial Hospital put a referendum on the March 26 ballot on whether the project should proceed. Lawyers for the private, nonprofit hospital also threatened to sue any county officials who spoke out for the clinic project before the election.

Schillo said he is paying for the meeting room himself and has notified the county he is on vacation. “I’m an individual citizen,” he said. “I have a right to speak. And I’m going to talk about it. And I’m not on county time.”

In addition, Schillo will talk about his first year in office.

The forum is one of a series the supervisor is holding throughout his district.

The meeting is scheduled for 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Sage Room at the Goebel Senior and Adult Center, 1385 Janss Road.
