SPEAKING OUT: Jennifer Jensen, whose husband was accidentally shot by a fellow Oxnard policeman, bears no malice toward the officer who pulled the trigger (B1). . . . Sgt. Daniel Christian was James Jensen Jr.’s friend and mentor, Jennifer Jensen said, and he’s suffering too. “No one will really understand. It is something we will have to go through together.”

HOOP-DE-DO: Tonight’s the night to thank the Ventura College basketball teams, which made history earlier this month as the first community college teams to win both the men’s and women’s titles in the same year. . . . The men had won the year before, but this title was a first for the women, Coach Ned Mircetic said. . . . The fete, which will feature game highlights and the awarding of trophies, begins at 7 in the college gym.

CAMPAIGN TRAIL: In a tribute to the faithful, Alan Keyes returns to Ventura County this weekend, the only presidential candidate to set foot here since the race began. . . . The county has teemed with activity for the conservative Republican, with devotees opening their pocketbooks for his shoestring campaign and distributing his videotaped speeches nationwide. Says Richard Ferrier of Santa Paula: “He has the deepest and most charitable understanding of the American republic since Abraham Lincoln.” . . . Keyes will speak at Ventura High School at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Call 525-0547 for more info.

FLU ATTACK: Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) had to spend the night in a Washington hospital after coming down with a dehydrating case of the flu (B1). . . . Locally, the flu season is still in full swing. In fact, said Lin Glusac of the county’s Public Health Department: “We’ve had a little upsurge in the past week.” . . . If flu sufferers get to the doctor right away, Glusac said, there’s a drug that can lessen the symptoms. But antibiotics don’t help, she said.
