Plans for Shopping Center, Cinema OKd

A new shopping center, complete with 12-screen theater, may be coming to Thousand Oaks’ busy commercial district near Moorpark Road.

The Thousand Oaks Planning Commission Tuesday approved plans for the center, called Plaza Nuevo, at Thousand Oaks Boulevard and Lombard Street. Since the plans call for the property to be rezoned, the project will go to the City Council for final approval.

Plaza Nuevo’s centerpiece will be a 12-screen Edwards cinema. Although several commissioners questioned the need for more movie screens in Thousand Oaks, Edwards Theatres President Jim Edwards III told the panel that the local market could easily support more theaters.

“There is a demand from this city,” he said. “We get an awful lot of people from Thousand Oaks in our Camarillo theater.”

Plaza Nuevo did not win the commission’s unanimous support. Commissioner Linda Parks voted against the project, saying it would add too many car trips and too much pollution to an already congested area.
