Ex-Teacher Pleads No Contest in Sex Case

Share

A former Fillmore High School teacher pleaded no contest Friday to a felony charge of having sex with a student.

Daniel Ramirez, 42, entered the plea in Ventura County Municipal Court on the condition that he face no immediate state prison time when he is sentenced next month.

“Probably what he will be looking at is a year in County Jail and up to five years probation,” Deputy Dist. Atty. Mark R. Pachowicz said.

For sentencing purposes, a plea of no contest is considered the same as a guilty plea. It does, however, offer some protection to a defendant from automatic liability stemming from a civil damage lawsuit.

Ramirez was accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student last summer. He was placed on paid leave after the allegations surfaced and was put on unpaid leave after criminal charges were filed this month, Supt. Mario Contini said.

School officials had opted not to renew Ramirez’s contract for next year even before the sexual misconduct charge arose, the superintendent said.

“We just hope that everyone still maintains confidence in the others on the teaching staff,” Contini said.
