A small airplane crashed into Box Springs Mountain between Riverside and Moreno Valley on Friday, killing the pilot and a passenger but hurting no one on the ground, authorities reported.

Witnesses said the plane, identified as a Piper Cherokee, was flying stunts in fog just after noon when it crashed near the top of the 2,000-foot-high mountain, said Mark Lohman, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department spokesman.

The victims were not identified, and investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were expected to examine the site today, Lohman said.
