Former UCLA basketball Coach Walt Hazzard, a scout and special administrative assistant with the Lakers, was in stable condition Friday night after suffering a stroke earlier in the day, a hospital spokesman said.

Hazzard was transferred from Midway Hospital to UCLA Medical Center on Friday night and admitted to the coronary ward at 9 p.m.

Said Greg Madsen of Midway Hospital: “When I last saw him, he was alert, his eyes were open and he was talking to his wife.”

A two-time All-American at UCLA and the player of the year in 1964, when the Bruins won the first of their 10 national championships in 12 seasons, Hazzard turns 54 on April 15. He played 10 years in the NBA before retiring in 1974.

Hazzard coached at Compton College and Chapman College before returning to UCLA, leading the program there from 1985-88. His teams went 77-47 and won the NIT championship the first year. He is in his second season with the Lakers. His main responsibilities are with scouting and community relations.
