3 Adults Arrested in Little League Melee

A brawl at a Ventura Little League game involving three relatives of one of the players, both coaches and the umpire ended with the arrest of three of the participants, police said.

The melee began at the Montalvo Little League field on Johnson Drive on Friday evening when a game was called because of a lopsided score and the relatively late hour.

Hulon Simpson Jr., the Ventura father of a player on the winning team, apparently became irate when officials called the game before his son had played, Lt. Steve Bowman said. The 27-year-old Simpson and his brother, 25-year-old John Simpson of Ventura, climbed the outfield fence and confronted the coach of the boy’s team, police said.

The two opposing coaches and the umpire attempted to prevent an altercation when the boy’s grandfather, Hulon Simpson Sr., 49, of Ventura allegedly struck one of the coaches, Bowman said.

A scuffle ensued, during which umpire Greg Wissinger, 32, of Ventura was knocked to the ground and allegedly kicked by the Simpsons, Bowman said.

The three Simpsons were placed under citizen’s arrest at the scene and taken to the police station, where they were cited to appear in court on suspicion of battery, Bowman said.

The trio had been drinking before the fight, Bowman said.

About 30 of the 10-year-old Little League players, many of them crying, witnessed the brawl, Bowman said.
