Buena Park Man Rescued Off Island

His boat rammed on the rocks and wedged against a sheer cliff, Charn Premyodhin was airlifted unharmed Tuesday night off Anacapa Island by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, authorities said.

Premyodhin, 51, of Buena Park, arrived shaken but sound at Oxnard Airport about 8:50 p.m., Coast Guard Petty Officer Randy Reid said.

Premyodhin’s 30-foot sport fishing boat, the Tanom, lost power and the currents washed it ashore on the east end of Anacapa Island near Arch Rock about 6 p.m., shortly before dark, said Petty Officer Mark Wilkins of the Coast Guard’s Channel Islands station.

After sending a “mayday” distress signal, Premyodhin lost communication with a 41-foot Coast Guard boat that was on its way to rescue him. He shot flares, leading the Coast Guard to him, Wilkins said.

Because the boat could not squeeze in to rescue Premyodhin, a Coast Guard helicopter was maneuvered next to the cliff and hoisted Premyodhin to safety.
