A Hawthorne pawnshop owner shot a man Tuesday who was allegedly attempting to rob him, police said.

Hawthorne police officers responded to a silent robbery alarm at the A-1 Pawnshop in the 3900 block of West Rosecrans Avenue about 4:15 p.m., said Lt. Arvid Krueger.

“As officers were arriving, they were advised that two suspects were still inside with an employee and one of the suspects had been shot,” he said.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that one of the men pulled a gun on the owner and was attempting to rob him when he obtained a gun and shot the suspect,” Krueger said.

Both suspects were taken into custody, and the wounded man was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Krueger said. Their names were not immediately released.

The wounded man was shot in the side and was undergoing surgery.

Police said no charges were expected to be filed against the pawnshop owner.
