South Bay : SQUEAKY WHEEL

Share

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is grinding down the rails on a Hawthorne section of the Green Line to keep the train from making a shrill noise equivalent to the sound of a small jet engine.

MTA technicians are shaving down a one-mile track of railway near Aviation Boulevard and Rosecrans Avenue to keep the wheels from scraping as they round the curved route. Residents living in Hawthorne’s Holly Glen neighborhood have complained that the 8-month-old commuter trains wake them when the train begins it route at 4:30 a.m., MTA spokeswoman Clara Potes-Fellow said.
