NEW NAME: It may have taken years...

NEW NAME: It may have taken years for Anaheim Stadium to become known as “The Big A” or Yankee Stadium to become “The House That Ruth Built,” but promoters of the Lancaster Municipal Stadium are already pushing their idea for a nickname. Officials of the Lancaster JetHawks, the new Seattle Mariners minor league franchise, have dubbed the stadium “The Hangar,” in honor of the region’s aerospace traditions. . . . One problem: In baseball, a “hanger” is jargon for a poorly thrown curveball.

SOCCER STARS: The Valley Edition has chosen Derrick Dyslin of Canada High School as boys’ soccer player of the year. (C10). He is joined by 11 other players honored by The Times in today’s Valley Sports.

CODE WARS: The L.A. City Council is lobbying against a push by Pasadena and other San Gabriel Valley cities to foist the new 626 area code upon the San Fernando Valley. Current plans call for the new code to be used in Burbank and parts east. But those communities are protesting the plan, urging that the change be made in the San Fernando Valley instead. . . . The council on Friday urged state officials to leave the San Fernando Valley alone.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: It’s a happy 90th birthday this month for the city of Glendale (B5). . . . The city has been asking 90-year-olds to help with the festivities; today, there’s a street party.
