A 6-year-old Oxnard girl who was hit by a car in front of her home was in critical but stable condition at Ventura County Medical Center, hospital officials said Sunday.

Veronica Angeles was hit Saturday at 5:12 p.m. in the 1800 block of Oneill Place.

According to Oxnard police, Maria Syczygielski, 39, of Oxnard was driving a white pickup truck westbound on Oneill. Syczygielski told police a car was double-parked in her lane, forcing her to pass in the street’s eastbound lane.

She then felt her truck run over something, looked in the rear-view mirror and saw a girl lying in the street, police said.

Veronica had been crossing the street when she was hit, police said. She suffered injuries to her head and numerous abrasions to her body, according to paramedic Lisa Brumit of Gold Coast Ambulance, who responded to the accident.

Police said Syczygielski became frightened when she realized she might have hit the child. She drove to her nearby home and told her husband what had happened. He then walked to the Angeles house.

Syczygielski was cited for being an unlicensed driver, police said, but had not been charged with hitting the child.
