Two people died Sunday when their car struck a guardrail and overturned, throwing them onto a freeway, authorities said.

Lydia Villegas, 23, of Santa Ana died at the scene. Elpidio Serna, 38, also of Santa Ana, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he died at 1:47 p.m., said a spokesman for the Orange County coroner’s office.

The California Highway Patrol said it was unclear who was driving the car.

The crash occurred at 10:45 a.m. at the interchange of the Santa Ana and Riverside freeways.

The car was heading north on the Santa Ana Freeway when it swerved, the CHP said.

The driver apparently tried to veer back onto the original lane when the car careened onto the freeway transition road embankment, CHP said.

The car struck the guardrail and overturned.
