A 55-year-old Anaheim man was struck and killed Monday night after darting into oncoming traffic, police said.

The pedestrian, whose name was being withheld pending family notification, was crossing La Palma Avenue about 100 feet from Magnolia Avenue at 7 p.m. when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle, a police spokesman said. He was not in a crosswalk.

The driver did not appear to be speeding, police said, and told investigators he did not see the pedestrian until it was too late. He was not cited pending the investigation’s completion.

Factors that might have obscured his view include rain and the fact that the pedestrian was dressed in dark clothing, investigators said.

The Anaheim man was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he died.
