Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Heroine Cat a Hot Ticket for Adoption
A Port Washington animal shelter has received more than 1,000 calls to adopt a cat who risked her life to rescue her five month-old kittens from a fire. A New York City firefighter, battling a garage fire in Brooklyn, noticed the cat carrying a kitten out of the flames, a spokeswoman for the North Shore Animal League said. The cat went back into the burning building four more times to retrieve the rest of her litter. By her last trip, the cat was badly burned, but the kittens were only singed. The cats were taken to the shelter, where they were in guarded condition.
