Reds’ Boone Needs Surgery on Elbow

Cincinnati Red second baseman Bret Boone went on the disabled list and will need arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow. The Reds called up Eric Owens from triple-A Indianapolis to fill his spot.

Boone will have surgery in the next day or so and will be out three to six weeks.

The move left the Reds with six players on the disabled list before the first pitch on opening day: pitchers Jose Rijo (elbow surgery), Chuck McElroy (pulled hamstring) and Jeff Brantley (foot surgery), outfielders Thomas Howard (broken wrist) and Eric Anthony (separated shoulder) and Boone.

Jordan, 29, batted .296 with career highs in home runs (22), runs batted in (81) and stolen bases (24) in 131 games for the Cardinals last season.

He was hurt trying to make a catch in Saturday’s game.

Outfielder Terry Bradshaw was called up from triple-A Louisville to replace Jordan.

Houston pitcher John Hudek, who had a rib on his right side removed last season, has a fracture of the top rib on his left side, X-rays revealed.

On Sunday, the Astros put Hudek on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 22 because of a torn muscle on the left side of his chest.

The Baltimore Orioles added right-handed pitcher Jimmy Myers to the 25-man roster. Myers, 26, was 0-0 with a 2.00 ERA in nine appearances for Baltimore this spring.
