Sound Wall to Be Built Along Freeway

Construction is expected to begin this month on a sound wall along a stretch of freeway near a residential Agoura Hills neighborhood, Caltrans officials said Tuesday.

The work is tentatively scheduled to begin April 15, said Caltrans spokeswoman Patricia Reid. The $532,000 project is due to be completed by August, she said.

The contract has been awarded to Los Angeles-based Lehigh Construction Co., Reid said. Canwood Street residents, who live next to the freeway, began lobbying the state to build the wall back in 1985.

About two years ago, Caltrans, which is providing most of the funds, put the city on a waiting list until money became available.

A dispute arose between the residents and two businesses along Canwood Street, which wanted the wall to have a 500-foot opening so that their establishments would be more visible from the freeway.

The residents wanted the opening limited to no more than 350 feet. They settled on 400 feet.

The 16-foot-high wall will run along the north side of the freeway from Reyes Adobe Road almost to the Agoura Hills/Westlake Village city line, officials said. The 2,080-foot-long wall will be built in two sections with a 400-foot opening.
