City Puts Term Limits on November Ballot

Though City Council members voted unanimously Monday night to put a term-limit measure on the November ballot, some of them said they will campaign against the initiative.

In a 1994 advisory measure, 85% of the city’s voters endorsed term limits, even though state law at the time did not allow such a policy for so-called general law cities such as Buena Park.

But the Legislature passed a law, effective this year, to permit the limits, and a number of cities across Orange County are responding by putting the question to voters this fall.

Buena Park council members, saying they will bow to public sentiment, drafted a ballot measure that would limit future members to three four-year terms.

The measure states that council members could run for the office again only after sitting out one full year.
