$300,000 Earmarked for Pier Restoration

Share

The city of Port Hueneme will spend $300,000 to restore a portion of its pier destroyed during the January 1995 storms, although most of the money will be reimbursed by the state and federal governments.

The City Council approved spending the money at its meeting Wednesday.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has agreed to pay 75% of the cost of repairing the 100-foot east wing, which will restore the pier to its distinctive T-shape. The state will kick in most of the remainder, lowering the final city cost to between $15,000 and $20,000, Councilman Tony Volante said.

“It might help tourism,” he said. “We have quite a few people coming out to do fishing on that pier.”

The construction is not scheduled to begin until after the Labor Day weekend when the summer tourist season is over. The project is expected to take 60 to 90 days to complete.

This will be the second major repair of the pier in two years.

Last year, the city spent about $170,000 to stabilize the structure after violent surf slammed the pier during a Jan. 4 storm.
