Woman Critically Injured in Crash
A 21-year-old Ojai woman was listed in critical condition Friday at Ventura County Medical Center after the car she was driving struck a horse on California 33 near Casitas Springs, the California Highway Patrol said.
Rebecca York was found slumped behind the wheel of her car several hours after the initial report. The car had slid down an embankment and was not clearly visible to officers, authorities said.
The CHP responded to a call about 2 a.m. Friday reporting a hit-and-run accident involving a horse that had been killed by a passing car, officials said.
When investigators arrived at the crash site near California 33 and Casitas Vista Road, no one was found.
But by daybreak, CHP officers found York seriously injured in the driver’s seat of the car, which apparently careened down a nearby ditch immediately after the collision.
Investigators were unable to say how the horse got loose.
