Retired physician Sammy Lee was honored by the USC General Alumni Assn. at its 64th annual awards dinner in March.

Lee, 75, a Huntington Beach resident, received an Alumni Merit Award for a lifetime of achievement.

A graduate of the USC School of Medicine in 1947, Lee became the first Asian American to win an Olympic gold medal, taking the top honor in swimming at the 1948 Games and again in the 1952 Olympics.

In honoring Lee, USC’s trustees said they have chosen Asia as the immediate focus of the university’s outreach efforts and are working to enhance the university’s role in educating international leaders.
