HEAVENLY DROPPINGS

Regarding Rocco Catena’s March 31 letter complaining about the “collection of Beatles droppings” called “Anthology 2,” I acknowledge the fact that one man’s meat is another man’s poison, but calling these priceless nuggets “droppings” is bizarre and extreme.
Catena’s anger about the release of these outtakes and demos of classic Beatles songs (which many of us have been waiting 20 years to hear) is inexplicable, and I’m surprised that you printed it. A letter complaining that the CD reissue of John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” contains additional versions that did not appear on the original LP would be passed over as the ranting of a nutcase.

I am 45 years old and, unlike Rocco Catena, have not been as excited about a record (oops, I’m showing my age) release since the early ‘70s. It is wonderful hearing alternate versions of Beatles’ classics, some of which are as good as the original releases (i.e., “Good Morning” and “Tomorrow Never Knows”).
There must be a whole lot of people who enjoy this “crapola,” as “Anthology 2” is still No. 1 on the charts. I’m sure wherever John Lennon is, he’s enjoying his mates and his continuing popularity and the public’s appreciation of these historical recordings. I can’t wait for “Anthology 3” and the chance to be “expletived” again.
