A horse on an evening ride was put to death after it suffered two broken legs when it was hit by a car--an accident that also sent the horse’s rider to the hospital with minor injuries, authorities said Monday.

The accident occurred about 7:30 p.m. Sunday when the horse apparently bolted into traffic in the 14700 block of Bledsoe Street and was struck from behind, said Officer Wendell Bowers of the Los Angeles Department of Animal Regulation.

Bowers and other animal regulation officers arrived at about 8 p.m. and, after determining that a veterinarian was at least an hour away, received permission from the horse’s owner to shoot it.

“The horse was in pretty bad shape,” said Bowers. “It was bleeding and had two broken legs.”

The rider, whose name was not released, was taken to Olive View-UCLA Medical Center for treatment of a possible fractured leg and minor injuries, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis.

The driver of the car was not hurt, Collis said.
