Veterans Hospital Offers Glimpse of Research Projects

Share

It is National VA Research Week at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in West Los Angeles, and the hospital is marking the occasion by inviting students, residents and health organizations to the facility to talk about ongoing research.

Researchers at the West Los Angeles facility are working on about 500 research projects at any given time, said Dr. Stephen Pandol, research director. The projects include exploring treatments for mental illnesses, particularly schizophrenia, as well as for drug and alcohol abuse.

The hospital also has a strong AIDS research program and is the site of experiments for epilepsy and cancer, Pandol said.

The veterans medical center--one of 172 nationwide, and one of about 40 where research is conducted--is affiliated with UCLA, which means that many members of the medical staff work in VA and university medical facilities.
