A huge movie theater with 16 screens and stadium-like seating will begin construction next week in an El Segundo office park near several upscale restaurants.

Pacific Theatres will break ground April 16 at Rosecrans Avenue and Nash Street for the movie complex. The company hopes to have the entertainment center finished by Nov. 15.

“We noticed we are not present in the South Bay area,” said Chan Wood, executive vice president and director of marketing for Pacific Theatres. “And it’s one of the highest-grossing areas [for movies]. We’ve been looking for a site.”

Pacific Theatres also is planning to open an 18-screen multiplex next summer in Gardena.

Construction of the 16-screen complex is part of a plan by Continental Development Corp. to bring more business to its 86-acre office park.

“There are no viable alternatives for entertainment in the South Bay,” said Richard Lundquist, president of Continental Development Corp. “People go to the [Third Street] Promenade [in Santa Monica] and Universal City for an evening out, and we are trying to create our own version of that kind of project by bringing in amenities.”.
