‘B.C.’ Cartoon Printed on Religion Pages

Re “Times Publishes ‘B.C.’ Cartoon After Protests,” April 6:

Betcha 99.9999% of your readers (that should cover all but a half-dozen, max) wouldn’t get frenzied over “B.C.” “message” cartoons appearing uncensored on your comics pages. Thank God (whatever) wisdom doesn’t hinge on political correctness.

There’s a group around that can give you a clue to more comfortable living. It’s called Rule 62--”Don’t take yourself so damn seriously.”

* Does The Times not consider religion on the comics page relevant to daily life? Or are the other subjects that are satirized on a daily basis of more concern and interest to the reading populace, or your editorial staff? The fact that The Times chose to print the strips it had omitted is laudable. That they were placed in the religion section gives the impression that The Times feels that religion belongs strictly in the religion section, and not within the body of other issues which are a part of the lives of all of us.

The Times should be thankful for the service Johnny Hart does to the community, giving laughter through “B.C.” throughout the year, with an extra reminder from time to time that humor and faith aren’t mutually exclusive.

* I was incensed when I read that you refused to publish some “B.C.” cartoons because they had a religious nature. Why is it harmful to make a religious statement in the comics; political statements are made constantly.

If anyone is offended by a comic, they do not have to read it. Please, let us make up our own minds.

* As a devout agnostic, I religiously follow “B.C.” and don’t understand what all the fuss is about. Thumbs up for Hart’s artistic, creative and highly entertaining style. Keep it in the comics section.

RICHARD RUBY

* I have always found The Times’ comics section amusing, thought-provoking, and yes, even inspirational. Especially “B.C.”--”Before Censorship.”

STAN N. SEIDEL

Westchester

* You did the right thing in not printing the “B.C.” religious cartoon in the comics section. Very sensible!

* Thank you for printing “B.C.” on April 6. It increased my faith, hope and love--virtues essential for life in an increasingly secular society.
