Coalition Files Suit to Halt Metro Red Line Construction
Five community groups filed a federal lawsuit Thursday against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, seeking an injunction to bar further construction of the Metro Red Line.
The lawsuit alleges that the MTA failed to comply with federal regulations mandating that viable alternative routes be studied when a route affects historic sites. MTA spokesman Steve Chesser said he has not seen a copy of the complaint and declined to comment.
According to the lawsuit, brought by the Hollywood Boulevard Community Council, the Hollywood Project Area Committee, L.A. Twice, Coalition Against the Pipeline and North Hollywood Residents’ Assn., the MTA failed to comply with a section of the Department of Transportation Act in its construction of the Red Line.
The U.S. Department of Transportation, which funded the project, is also named as a defendant.
The plaintiffs point to the sinking of Hollywood Boulevard, which allegedly caused structural damage to historical buildings and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The complaint seeks a preliminary and permanent injunction, barring further construction until the MTA complies with the federal regulations.
