Three Home Runs a Powerful Mystery to Wilson

With only 12 home runs in four previous major league seasons, Dan Wilson is no power hitter, and that made it difficult to fathom his hitting three homers Thursday in Seattle’s 9-1 victory at Detroit.

“It’s really hard as a hitter to explain sometimes how you feel up there,” Wilson said. “It’s kind of weird. But I got good pitches to hit and I did something with them.”

Ken Griffey Jr. hit a solo homer, his third, and Russ Davis had a three-run homer for Seattle.

Wilson hit a two-run homer in the second inning off Greg Gohr (0-2) and connected for solo homers off Mike Christopher in the seventh and eighth. He was on deck when Davis made Seattle’s final out.

When Wilson wasn’t hitting homers, he was catching Randy Johnson (2-0), who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning.

Alan Trammell led off the sixth inning with a single off Johnson, who gave up three hits and struck out 12 in 7 1/3 innings.

Chicago 8, Texas 5--Lyle Mouton hit a three-run homer with one out in 11th inning for the White Sox at Chicago. The loss was the first for the Rangers after seven consecutive victories.

Will Clark put the Rangers ahead, 5-4, with a 10th-inning homer, but the White Sox tied it on Ozzie Guillen’s sacrifice fly.

New York 5, Kansas City 3--Jimmy Key struck out seven batters in five innings at New York for his first victory in more than a year.

Key, coming back from rotator cuff surgery, left the game in the sixth favoring his pitching arm, but said, “There’s no pain, just tightness. It’s just stiffness, without pain.”

Key gave up one run and three hits.

Minnesota 6, Boston 5--The Red Sox made three more errors (they have 12 in eight games) at Boston and the Twins’ Brad Radke improved to 3-0.

Boston made two errors as Minnesota took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Three misplays, only one scored an error, contributed to the Twins’ other runs. The Red Sox have 12 errors in eight games.

Oakland 11, Milwaukee 0--Doug Johns (2-0) gave up five hits in eight innings and started three double plays for the Athletics in a victory at Milwaukee.

Ernie Young drove in three runs and had a two-run double in a six-run eighth inning in which the Athletics had six consecutive hits.

Baltimore 14, Cleveland 4--Brady Anderson hit two of the Orioles’ six home runs at Baltimore, and Orel Hershiser (0-2) lasted only 3 2/3 innings, leaving with Cleveland trailing, 7-1.
