Telethon Considered to Finance City’s July 4th Events
To help the city pay for its annual Fourth of July celebration, a local cable-TV station is offering to organize its first telethon to seek donations.
The City Council on Monday will consider a proposal for the June 8 telethon on HBTV-3. Deputy City Administrator Richard Barnard said the 10-hour event would showcase local talent, ranging from professional performers to high school students.
Barnard said some acts would be recorded at the HBTV-3 studio or at Music City, a local nightclub that has offered use of its facilities. Other acts would be performed live during the telethon. The event would also feature interviews with local dignitaries and celebrities.
A phone center in the City Hall cafeteria would be staffed by volunteers for pledge calls.
The city’s Fourth of July Committee is trying to raise about $175,000 from local businesses and individuals to pay for the annual Independence Day parade and related events. The city is also seeking underwriters for telethon production costs, projected at about $2,600.
To reaching an audience beyond Huntington Beach, Barnard said, the city has asked Paragon Cable to extend viewership of the telethon in Garden Grove, Los Alamitos and Rossmoor.
