Why Angel Deal Is a Good One

Share

1. As long as Disney owns the Angels, they will stay in Anaheim. If Gene Autry were to sell the team to someone else, which we all know would happen, the Angels would be gone as soon as the agreement with the city runs out . . . six years, not 20.

2. Every owner in professional sports is holding their city hostage, demanding taxpayers pay all of the cost of renovations. Disney is going to pay 70%.

3. There is no NFL football in Anaheim! And there will not be an NFL team in Anaheim until there is one in Los Angeles. It is absurd to build this huge complex geared around a team that doesn’t exist.

4. The “Big A” was never built for football. Even with the renovations, it was not a football stadium. There were plans a long time ago to build a football stadium within the complex. Let’s do that . . . when we get a team.

5. Disney wants to be involved in sports. With Disney now in hockey and baseball, how long do you think it will be before they want buy or build a football team as well, one we can call our own? By the way, for all of you that don’t already know, Anaheim is in Orange County, not L.A. We don’t want a team that doesn’t want us. Remember the LOS ANGELES Rams?

* Congratulations to the city of Anaheim for a job well done!

A council majority, under the astute leadership of Mayor Tom Daly, have crafted a “classic” deal on behalf of Anaheim taxpayers and Orange County in general.

Anaheim has procured Disney as a long-term tenant in their 30-year-old, functionally obsolete stadium.

The timing and opportunity are what make this deal classic. The time is now for the Angels to transition from their beloved but tired ownership to the energy and resources of the Disney company. The opportunity to facilitate this transition and at the same time receive substantial contribution from the tenant was recognized and acted upon by the council majority.

Anaheim is fortunate in many ways, not the least which is having a mayor that recognizes and is willing to stand up for a good business decision.
