Share

A grass-roots group in Culver City plans to continue its fight against a naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps that started at Culver City High School in September.

Called the Culver City Community Network, the group will sponsor a forum on JROTC at the Veterans Memorial Building in Culver City at 7 tonight.

Hugo Rasmussen, a World War II veteran who is a member of the Veterans for Peace group, will speak about the current role of the military. Joe Maizlish, a mediator who specializes in conflict resolution, will discuss ways in which students can resolve problems peacefully.

The network group also plans to present information about the amount of money the school district is spending to pay instructors of the JROTC program, said Gary Silbiger, network president.

The Community Network contends that JROTC high school programs advocate violence. The group also argues that the money spent on teachers for the JROTC program would be better spent on other classes.

The group has been passing out fliers at the city’s schools for the past week, asking parents and students to eliminate the JROTC program.
