Pop

No-frills honky-tonk music is what Dale Watson is about. Last year, on his debut album, “Cheatin’ Heart Attack,” the singer-songwriter from Austin, Texas, made it clear that he lives on the old and gritty side of the country music tracks, not in the new, slickly toned ‘burbs. A friendly little barroom like the Doll Hut should be just the milieu for Watson’s well-seasoned, Waylon-meets-Merle singing voice and his tales of temptation, indulgence and the consequences thereof.

Watson was recently on the “Roadhouse Revival” tour that included Anaheim’s favorite roots-and-country sons, Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys. His second album, “Blessed or Damned,” is due out next month.

Comedy

Like most comedians, Jack Coen, a veteran club headliner and former New Jersey forklift driver, uses a little of this and a little of that to make his act work. But unlike most stand-ups, Coen bases a large chunk of his act on topical material, and he’s usually comfortable with whatever the daily newspaper brings. Advancements in space exploration, however, have him a little concerned. “They can now see the end of the universe. What if they look and see a big fat guy sitting on the end of the couch?”

Jazz

Guitarist John Pisano has backed the best, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, Herb Alpert and Sergio Mendes. The New York native’s jazz credentials are just as strong, beginning with Chico Hamilton in the ‘50s and continuing through such names as Buddy DeFranco, Jimmy Giuffre and fellow guitarist Joe Pass. Pisano’s most frequent associate lately is his wife, vocalist Jeannie. The two combine talents in their group the Flying Pisanos, an ensemble with a taste for Brazilian material and rhythms.

Family Affair

Panel discussions on the life of Clarence Lobo and the future of the Acjachemen Nation and Juaneno Band of Mission Indians, a Native American film festival, and performances by the Acjachemen Singers and Costanoan Rumsen Dancers. These are among highlights of an all-day celebration, today at UC Irvine, called “Orange County’s First Peoples: Honoring the Contributions of Chief Clarence Lobo.”

Students from the Clarence Lobo Elementary School will sing a song about Lobo, who was instrumental in gaining recognition for local Native Americans; members of the Lobo family will participate in the discussions. Exhibits will be set up outside the UCI Student Center.
