Jackson Meeting: The Rev. Jesse Jackson will meet today with entertainment industry officials to discuss the inclusion of women and people of color in movies and on TV. Jackson will meet in Hollywood with members of the Writers Guild of America, the Directors Guild of America, the Screen Actors Guild, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and the L.A. Media Image Coalition, a Jackson spokesman said in a statement. Jackson, who led a protest against this year’s Academy Awards because of what he charged was a lack of ethnic diversity among the nominees, wants the entertainment industry to develop a “Rainbow Covenant.” “The covenant’s goal is to have the film and television industry make a commitment to tell all of America’s stories, from all of America’s storytellers,” the statement said.

‘Primal’ First: Paramount’s “Primal Fear” scared away the competition at the box office during the weekend, taking the top spot for the third week in a row with $6.8 million, according to early industry estimates. “The Substitute,” a new movie from Orion starring Tom Berenger, was running second with $6.1 million. Disney’s “James and the Giant Peach” was in the No. 3 spot with $5.4 million. In fourth place, MGM/UA’s “The Birdcage” took in $4.9 million in its seventh weekend in release, to reach a cumulative gross of $104.7 million. The movie crossed the $100-million mark Friday, the first film released this year to do so. Universal’s “Fear” was in fifth place with $4.1 million.

Duo From Disney: Walt Disney Animation’s Canadian arm is working on “Beauty and the Beast: Christmas Belle,” a home video sequel to the animated hit movie featuring the story of Belle’s first Christmas as a prisoner in the Beast’s castle. A Christmas 1997 release is planned. . . . Walt Disney Pictures will hold a free premiere of its upcoming animated movie, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” at the 65,000-seat Louisiana Superdome on June 19, with a parade and accompanying festivities at other New Orleans’ locales, including the French Quarter and historic Jackson Square.

What a Turnoff: Get ready to let go of the remote. The second annual National TV-Turnoff Week starts Wednesday and concludes on April 30. Sponsors say 1 million people turned off the tube last year and 3 million are expected to do the same this year. The nonprofit TV-Free America, founded in 1994, says the week is endorsed by 24 national organizations this year, including the American Federation of Teachers, the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and the American Medical Assn. The week is designed to let people discover alternatives to TV watching.

Summer at the Globe: The Old Globe Theatre is San Diego has announced two more productions to round out its summer season. “The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (Abridged)” by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield will occupy the Old Globe July 20-Aug. 24. A.R. Gurney’s “Sylvia” will play at the smaller Cassius Carter Centre Stage from Sept. 7-Oct. 12.

Sweeney Solo: “God Said, ‘Ha!’ ” a solo performance piece about family, career, love and death by former “Saturday Night Live” regular Julia Sweeney, will open at West Hollywood’s Coronet Theatre for four weeks starting June 1. Sweeney is currently working on a comedy pilot for the Fox network based on the theater piece, which sold out during a recent run in San Francisco.

Just a Mistake: No criminal charges will be filed against the police officers who mistakenly shot at a boat carrying Jimmy Buffett and rocker Bono off the coast of Jamaica, an official there said last week. No one was hurt in the Jan. 16 shooting. The officers claim to have mistaken the singers for drug traffickers when they landed in a seaplane and boarded the boat. Police have apologized for the incident.

Tenor Luciano Pavarotti will hold a news conference today in Vancouver, Canada, regarding an upcoming worldwide concert spectacular to be held in Toronto. . . . Naomi Judd, former member of the country singing duo the Judds, will make her TV sitcom debut when she guest-stars on NBC’s “3rd Rock From the Sun” on May 7. . . . The national tour of a photographic exhibit depicting Jackie Kennedy Onassis in her “Camelot” years continues its stop here through Wednesday at the Dyansen Gallery, 337 N. Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Seventy-five photographs by former White House photographer Jacques Lowe are on display; admission is free. Proceeds from the exhibit’s catalog and poster sales will benefit a Leukemia Society lymphoma research fund named after the late first lady.
