Sylmar : Metrolink Transit Hub Fund to Get $246,000
The City Council on Tuesday appropriated $246,000 toward the construction of a $1-million Intermodal Transit Center at the Sylmar-San Fernando Metrolink Station, which would accommodate trains, buses, future smart shuttles, taxicabs and bicycles.
“This will make the existing station a true transit hub,” said Annette Castro, chief deputy for Councilman Richard Alarcon, who represents the northeast Valley.
Eventually, nine bus lines will originate at the hub, she added.
Provided that environmental clearance is granted for the one-acre plot, landscaping and construction of bus shelters, bays, information kiosks and benches at the Intermodal Transit Center could begin in the fall, Castro said.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority had pledged $839,000 toward the transit station. The city contribution is $186,000 in matching funds and another $60,000 in reimbursable funding.
Local officials also recently broke ground for a child-care center at the Sylmar-San Fernando Metrolink station. It is slated to open in June.
