Cyclists to Assist in Diabetes Fight

Cyclists from Ventura and Santa Barbara counties will team up Saturday to help raise money to battle diabetes.

The Ventura County and Santa Barbara County chapters of the American Diabetes Assn. will host the fifth annual Tour De Cure, a cycling event that winds from Carpinteria State Beach Park to Emma Wood State Beach in Ventura.

The 100-kilometer ride starts at 7 a.m., followed by a 50-kilometer ride at 8 a.m. and a 25-kilometer ride at 9 a.m.

The event is held in major cities across the country.

To take part, cyclists pledge money that helps fund diabetes research and public education programs.

Proceeds from the local event will benefit diabetes education in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

In the two counties, officials estimate that 9% of residents have diabetes. The disease affects about one in 20 people in the general population, with a higher incidence among Latinos, African Americans and Native Americans.
