The Pacific 10 Conference suspended UCLA baseball Coach Gary Adams for six games for ordering Bruin pitcher Pete Zamora to throw at an Arizona State player last Sunday.

In a statement released late Tuesday, the conference accepted UCLA’s proposed four-game suspension for Adams and Zamora, but added two recently scheduled games that were not on the Bruins’ schedule.

UCLA spokesman Marc Dellins said the games were added to make up for rainouts earlier this year and not intended to make Adams and Zamora available for this weekend’s conference series at Stanford.

“Gary had already decided he was going to sit out the Stanford series,” Dellins said.

UCLA and Adams were made aware of the suspensions Tuesday afternoon. Adams did not wish to comment on the conference’s ruling. Zamora, a sophomore, and Adams will also sit out a regularly scheduled game against Loyola Marymount on Thursday.

According to NCAA rules, Zamora must serve a four-game suspension, and Adams must sit out one game. On Monday, Adams said he was suspending himself for four games because he felt the coach’s penalty should equal the player’s.

Adams said he ordered Zamora to hit the first batter he faced because Arizona State’s Ryan Bradley had twice hit Bruin Troy Glaus this season--the second incident coming Saturday. Adams said he admitted to the act in protest of the NCAA’s leniency toward coaches whose players throw at opposing batters.
