Joe Murphy scored at 10:02 of the third overtime as the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the host Calgary Flames, 2-1, Tuesday night and became the first team to advance to the second round of the playoffs.

Murphy pounced on a giveaway by Calgary’s Trent Yawney at the side of the net, skated across the slot and beat Rick Tabaracci to send the Flames to yet another first-round defeat.

The Flames have not won a playoff series since winning the Stanley Cup in 1989.

Tuesday night’s game was the longest in Flames’ history and the longest in the NHL since Buffalo beat New Jersey, 1-0, at 5:43 of the fourth overtime on April 27, 1994.

The Blackhawks sent the game into overtime on Jeremy Roenick’s goal with nine seconds left in regulation, his second of the playoffs.

The Flames had taken a 1-0 lead at 5:53 of the second period on a goal by Jarome Iginla, his first.

St. Louis 5, Toronto 1--The Blues used two short-handed goals to move within one victory of eliminating the Maple Leafs.

St. Louis, getting short-handed goals from Shayne Corson and Brett Hull, took a 3-1 lead over Toronto.

Toronto was 4-1-1 against St. Louis during the regular season, but Coach Nick Beverley was reduced to calling his team “nimrods” Tuesday night.

He also complained that St. Louis Coach Mike Keenan was influencing the officiating in a profanity-laced postgame news conference.

“I belong in this league every bit as much as Mike Keenan or anybody else,” Beverley said. “He’s not getting under my skin. The whole scene is getting under my skin.”

Detroit 6, Winnipeg 1--Sergei Fedorov had four assists for the Red Wings, who took a 3-1 lead in the series in what might have been the last game played at Winnipeg.

The Jets are moving to Phoenix next season.

Philadelphia 4, Tampa Bay 1--John LeClair, who had missed the last game because of a severe ankle sprain, scored two power-play goals for the top-seeded Flyers, who evened their series with eighth-seeded Tampa Bay, 2-2, with a victory at St. Petersburg, Fla.

An NHL single-game record crowd of 28,183 watched LeClair score from nearly identical spots on the ice in the first and third periods.

New York Rangers 4, Montreal 3--Adam Graves scored twice in a three-goal second period for the Rangers, who evened their series with the Canadians, 2-2, with a victory at Montreal.

Graves, who has five goals in the series, got one on the power play and one at even strength, and Shane Churla also scored for the Rangers in building a 4-1 lead in the second period.
