Arson Rampage Causes $15,000 in Damage

Share

Arsonists in Norwalk and Downey struck 10 locations within six hours, beginning with a road flare that shattered a laundermat window late Tuesday, investigators said.

The fires, which caused more than $15,000 in damage, appear to be related, according to investigators, and may have all been ignited by flares. Four cars, three businesses and a residence were among the targets, they said.

Investigators said they have spoken to only one witness, a truck driver, who says he saw at least two men lighting an unspecified object in Downey early Wednesday.

“He said there was a fire in their hands and then they threw it,” Downey Fire Marshal Bob Rowe said.

Deputy Barney Villa said his arson and explosives detail had no suspects, but that detectives had taken several fingerprints in addition to other evidence, including used flares.

Anyone with more information on the crimes is asked to call the sheriffs’ arson detail at (310) 946-7222, or the Downey Fire Department at: (310) 904-7348.
