KCAL Gets 30 Nominations for Los Angeles Area Emmys

KCAL-TV Channel 9 on Thursday captured nearly one-quarter of the nominations for the 48th annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards, honoring the best in local broadcast and cable programming during 1995.

The Disney-owned channel, which is up for sale, led the field with 30 nominations. KTTV-TV Channel 11 collected 23, with 12 for KCBS-TV Channel 2, 11 for KABC-TV Channel 7, 10 each for KCET-TV Channel 28 and KCOP-TV Channel 13, seven for KNBC-TV Channel 4, six for KTLA-TV Channel 5, four for L.A. CityView, three each for KMEX-TV Channel 34 and KVEA-TV Channel 52, three for Prime Sports and one each for KDOC-TV Channel 50, KSCI-TV Channel 18 and KPAS.

Winners will be announced June 1 in a ceremony at the Pasadena Civic. The awards are handed out by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

KCAL’s 10 p.m. news show was nominated for best daily 60-minute newscast, as was KNBC’s 5 p.m. news. Nominated as best daily 30-minute newscast were KNBC’s 11 p.m. broadcast and KMEX’s “Noticias 34” at 6 p.m.

KNBC also captured one of the nominations for best daytime newscast, for “Midday Report,” with KCBS’ “Action News at Noon” nabbing the other.

The nominations for best informational/public-affairs series produced in a studio were KCET’s “Life & Times,” KTLA’s “Making It! Minority Success Stories,” KCAL’s “The Marilyn Kagan Show” and KNBC’s “O.J. Simpson: The Trial.”

The TV academy also announced that four winners already have been decided in the local Emmys:

* Instructional programming: “U.S. Citizenship: A Dream Come True,” KSCI.

* Short promo/public-service announcement: Mike Benson, Winter Horton, “Money Mobile,” KCBS; Wilma Camacho, Gary Laird, “Photo Album,” KRCA.

* Graphics: Jiro Matsuki, David Snapp, “An Evening at the Academy Awards,” KABC.
