A 73-year-old Vietnam veteran who was believed to be dead until he applied for Social Security has been granted voluntary retirement and will be released from active duty, U.S. Army officials said Thursday.

Mateo Sabog had been listed by the Army as missing and presumed dead after a tour in Vietnam 26 years ago. Sabog was a master sergeant when he disappeared after getting off a plane in California en route to Fort Bragg, N.C.

However, an administrative investigation was launched after Sabog reemerged in February.

“The approval of his voluntary retirement was based on the 24 years of service he completed prior to his disappearance in 1970,” officials at Fort Gordon said in a statement.
