DC TALK: The Christian-rock trio DC Talk, appearing in concert May 4 at the Universal Amphitheatre, was named Artist of the Year this week at the Dove Awards ceremony of the Gospel Music Assn. in Nashville.

DC Talk’s Toby McKeehan won Song of the Year for “Jesus Freak” with co-writer Mark Heimermann. The male trio also won Rock Recorded Song of the Year for “Jesus Freak.” Their album with that title sold 85,000 copies in its first week of release.

The 1996 Dove Award ceremony, held at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, included tributes to evangelist Billy Graham and contemporary Christian music pioneer Andrae Crouch, a pastor in Pacoima.

HOSPITAL CELEBRATION: A liturgy and reception to celebrate the transfer of Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills and its affiliates into the Providence Health System will be held Sunday at San Fernando Mission. The Providence Health System also owns Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. HIV/AIDS CONFERENCE: A conference for people interested in getting personally involved in HIV/AIDS ministries will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 4 at First United Methodist Church of Glendale, 134 N. Kenwood St. Called “Preparing to Take the Next Step--Beyond Red Ribbons,” the event will include a panel of people affected by or living with HIV. Scheduled speakers include the Rev. Ed Hansen, chairman of the California-Pacific Conference AIDS Ministry Committee; Dr. John Gunnell, who has extensive experience in treating people with HIV/AIDS; Lindsay Ralphs, director of nursing services at the Chris Brownlee Hospice, and James Baer, coordinator of volunteer resources at the AIDS Service Center in Pasadena. HONOREE: Brother John T. Crowe, executive director of the Rancho San Antonio boys home in Chatsworth, will be among those honored at a civic awards dinner tonight sponsored by Los Angeles Council 621 of the Knights of Columbus. After receiving his master’s degree in social work from USC, Crowe worked with gang members in East Los Angeles and was a parole intern with the California Youth Authority. He came to Rancho San Antonio as a social worker in 1965. He has served as executive director since 1970.

UKRAINIAN CHILDREN: The children’s chorus Vesnivka from Kiev, Ukraine, will be featured at a 7 p.m. performance Tuesday at Adat Ari El, 12020 Burbank Blvd., North Hollywood. The concert, titled “Jerusalem: Crossroads of Peace,” will benefit the North Hollywood Food Pantry, Project Angel Food and the Women’s Care Cottage. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. REVIVAL: For the first time in 44 years, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church will host an evangelist for a revival service, according to Pastor Afrie Songco Joye. The Rev. Kimball Coburn, a full-time evangelist for the United Methodist Church who lives in Claremont, is leading the three-day revival that started Friday. The event will continue today with a prayer breakfast and Bible study at 9 a.m. and a worship celebration at 7 p.m. Sunday’s schedule includes worship celebrations at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., with a singles luncheon at noon and a couples potluck at 5 p.m. The church is located at 5619 Lindley Ave., Tarzana.
