The Boston Red Sox have put designated hitter/outfielder Kevin Mitchell (no home runs, three RBIs, .227 average) on the disabled list because of a hamstring injury. Mitchell joins another Red Sox designated hitter/outfielder, Jose Canseco, on the 15-day disabled list. Utility infielder Phil Clark was recalled from triple-A Pawtucket. . . . The Pittsburgh Pirates put pitcher Zane Smith (2-0, 2.92 ERA) on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right hamstring and purchased the minor league contract of pitcher Joe Boever, who was 5-7 with a 6.39 ERA with Detroit last season. . . . The New York Yankees said pitcher David Cone (3-1, 2.61 ERA) underwent a series of tests on his right arm and hand that revealed a minor circulatory condition. He missed his first start in nine years Saturday against the Minnesota Twins for what was originally thought to be a blister. According to the New York Daily News, Cone said he had trouble feeling the ball in each of his last two starts. Cone is expected to make his next start Thursday. . . . Seattle Mariner pitcher Bobby Ayala, who cut his pitching hand this week when his hotel window broke, faces a drunk-driving charge in Arizona, according to the News Tribune of Tacoma, Wash. Ayala, put on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday for the cut hand, was arrested after a March 14 auto accident in Phoenix.
