If I were stuck on a desert island, I’d want a bag of scones from Porta Via in Beverly Hills to see me through. Dense triangular wedges shot through with black currants and orange zest, these sturdy individual tea breads are short but not too short (they have a great crumbly crumb), sweet but not too sweet, and they have just the right edge of salt.

Porta Via, 424 N. Can~on Drive, Beverly Hills; (310) 274-6534. Scone, $2.
