The Dodgers, looking for a veteran right-hander to help offset the loss of Darren Hall, have engaged in preliminary trade talks with the Texas Rangers for right-hander Matt Whiteside. The Rangers want left-hander Billy Brewer of triple-A Albuquerque in return.

Whiteside, 28, has appeared in 170 games, including 147 the last three years. He struggled in his first thee games this season, yielding a 12.46 ERA, and is 1-0 with a 9.00 ERA in five games at triple-A Oklahoma City. He also is earning $375,000 with an option for $450,000 in 1997. Brewer, who earns $275,000, has pitched nine shutout innings at Albuquerque.
