Stray Bullet Wounds Woman at Ball Game

A 26-year-old Oxnard woman who was in the dugout at Beck Park during a Monday night softball game was shot in the calf by a young man on a bicycle, Oxnard police said.

Dozens of witnesses, including players and spectators, told police that five or six young men had been drinking and fighting next to the field before the 10:34 p.m. shooting. Police said the shooting appears to be gang-related and that the victim, Regina Adams, was an innocent bystander.

“We can only assume that there was a confrontation between two rival gangs,” Sgt. Bryan MacDonald said. “It’s really vague at this point. We’re still trying to sort it out.”

Adams apparently heard the shots, but was struck in the leg before she could flee the dugout, police said.

She was taken by ambulance to St. John’s Regional Medical Center where she was treated and released.

MacDonald said police are interviewing witnesses and are asking anyone who saw the fight or the shooting to call the Oxnard Police Department Gang Hotline at 339-4053.
