SUSPECTED ROBBER KILLED

A Long Beach liquor store owner, believing a would-be robber was pointing a gun under his jacket, shot first and killed the suspect, police say. No weapon was found.

Police said a 32-year-old man walked into Mike’s Liquors on East Pacific Coast Highway shortly before midnight and demanded money “a couple of times.”

The owner of the store “thought he was going to be shot, so he grabbed his own gun and shot the suspect,” said Long Beach Police spokesman Harry Erickson.

The man, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was struck more than once, although police did not reveal how many bullets were fired, the caliber of the handgun or the location of the wounds. The suspect died immediately, Erickson said.

“It wasn’t an overkill type of thing,” Erickson said. “The shooting appears to be self-defense.”.
