‘Hire a Veteran’ Is Theme Next Week

Share

“Hire a Veteran Week,” when the state Employment Development Department urges area employers to hire former members of the military, will begin next week.

James S. Lindsay, a veterans employment representative with the Santa Ana EDD office, said that veterans nationwide have a 3.2% unemployment rate, compared with 5.6% for the general population.

Still, Lindsay said the week is aimed at informing employers that veterans have valuable skills because of their time in the military.

“[Veterans] are good employees,” Lindsay said. “They’re used to taking orders.”

Lindsay said there are thousands of unemployed veterans in Orange County, but the EDD does not expect all of them to be hired next week.

The awareness week lasts from May 5 to 11, but Lindsay said that throughout the year, the EDD gives preference to veterans for job referrals, training, counseling and other services.

Those interested in hiring a veteran can call the EDD, which will attempt to match the employer’s needs with the skills of the veterans.
