Goodman Recall Drive Fails to Meet Deadline

Share

A petition drive to unseat Councilman Mark Goodman failed recently when organizers did not meet a deadline to submit enough signatures to qualify the recall for the November ballot.

Residents needed to collect 6,500 signatures from registered voters in the city. City Clerk Juanita Zarilla said the deadline passed last week without contact from the recall group, which was headed by resident Jim Tarvin.

Another recall attempt, this one against Councilman Eddie Rose, faded last month as petition gatherers also failed to collect enough signatures to qualify for the November ballot.

The recall efforts were sparked by the controversy over a letter sent by Rose on city letterhead heavily criticizing the O.J. Simpson verdict in language that some residents felt was racially tinged.

Although City Hall received many calls of support for Rose--a considerable number coming from outside the city--several Laguna Niguel residents headed by Cheryl Alpert announced their intention to recall the councilman.

At the same time, another group, led by Tarvin, filed a recall notice against Goodman.

Goodman’s term expires in November.
