Fumes Force Evacuation at Medical Clinic

Share

About 15 people were evacuated from a Ventura medical building Thursday when several people complained of eye and nose irritation amid fears that chemical fumes were the cause.

Hazardous materials crews from the Ventura and Oxnard fire departments inspected the Buenaventura Medical Clinic at 2601 E. Main St. and were unable to find a cause for the mysterious fumes, Ventura Fire Assistant Chief Richard Achee said.

Large fans aired out the building, and clinic officials agreed to inspect their equipment used to sterilize instruments, a possible source of the problem, Achee said. No injuries were reported and no one required medical attention, Achee said.

The hazardous materials team arrived about 11:30 a.m. and spent more than two hours at the scene.

The team stems from a county program approved last month that formed hazardous materials units with members from several fire departments, Achee said.
